| * fs: change return values from -EACCES to -EPERMZhao Hongjiang2013-02-261-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | According to SUSv3: [EACCES] Permission denied. An attempt was made to access a file in a way forbidden by its file access permissions. [EPERM] Operation not permitted. An attempt was made to perform an operation limited to processes with appropriate privileges or to the owner of a file or other resource. So -EPERM should be returned if capability checks fails. Strictly speaking this is an API change since the error code user sees is altered. As it is, we have a situation when file_table.c is about handling of struct file and file.c is about handling of descriptor tables; the reasons are historical - file_table.c used to be about a static array of struct file we used to have way back). A lot of stray ends got cleaned up and converted to saner primitives, disgusting mess in android/binder.c is still disgusting, but at least doesn't poke so much in descriptor table guts anymore. A bunch of relatively minor races got fixed in process, plus an ext4 struct file leak. - related thing - fget_light() partially unuglified; see fdget() in there (and yes, it generates the code as good as we used to have). - also related - bits of Cyrill's procfs stuff that got entangled into that work; _not_ all of it, just the initial move to fs/proc/fd.c and switch of fdinfo to seq_file. - Alex's fs/coredump.c spiltoff - the same story, had been easier to take that commit than mess with conflicts. The rest is a separate pile, this was just a mechanical code movement. - a few misc patches all over the place. Not all for this cycle, there'll be more (and quite a few currently sit in akpm's tree)." Fix up trivial conflicts in the android binder driver, and some fairly simple conflicts due to two different changes to the sock_alloc_file() interface ("take descriptor handling from sock_alloc_file() to callers" vs "net: Providing protocol type via system.sockprotoname xattr of /proc/PID/fd entries" adding a dentry name to the socket) * 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs: (72 commits) MAX_LFS_FILESIZE should be a loff_t compat: fs: Generic compat_sys_sendfile implementation fs: push rcu_barrier() from deactivate_locked_super() to filesystems btrfs: reada_extent doesn't need kref for refcount coredump: move core dump functionality into its own file coredump: prevent double-free on an error path in core dumper usb/gadget: fix misannotations fcntl: fix misannotations ceph: don't abuse d_delete() on failure exits hypfs: ->d_parent is never NULL or negative vfs: delete surplus inode NULL check switch simple cases of fget_light to fdget new helpers: fdget()/fdput() switch o2hb_region_dev_write() to fget_light() proc_map_files_readdir(): don't bother with grabbing files make get_file() return its argument vhost_set_vring(): turn pollstart/pollstop into bool switch prctl_set_mm_exe_file() to fget_light() switch xfs_find_handle() to fget_light() switch xfs_swapext() to fget_light() ...
| * fs: push rcu_barrier() from deactivate_locked_super() to filesystemsKirill A. Shutemov2012-10-021-0/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | There's no reason to call rcu_barrier() on every deactivate_locked_super(). We only need to make sure that all delayed rcu free inodes are flushed before we destroy related cache. Removing rcu_barrier() from deactivate_locked_super() affects some fast paths. E.g. on my machine exit_group() of a last process in IPC namespace takes 0.07538s. rcu_barrier() takes 0.05188s of that time. Signed-off-by: Kirill A. * | workqueue: deprecate flush[_delayed]_work_sync()Tejun Heo2012-08-201-3/+3
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | flush[_delayed]_work_sync() are now spurious. Mark them deprecated and convert all users to flush[_delayed]_work(). If you're cc'd and wondering what's going on: Now all workqueues are non-reentrant and the regular flushes guarantee that the work item is not pending or running on any CPU on return, so there's no reason to use the sync flushes at all and they're going away. * fs: introduce inode operation ->update_timeJosef Bacik2012-06-011-2/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Btrfs has to make sure we have space to allocate new blocks in order to modify the inode, so updating time can fail. We've gotten around this by having our own file_update_time but this is kind of a pain, and Christoph has indicated he would like to make xfs do something different with atime updates. So introduce ->update_time, where we will deal with i_version an a/m/c time updates and indicate which changes need to be made. The normal version just does what it has always done, updates the time and marks the inode dirty, and then filesystems can choose to do something different. I've gone through all of the users of file_update_time and made them check for errors with the exception of the fault code since it's complicated and I wasn't quite sure what to do there, also Jan is going to be pushing the file time updates into page_mkwrite for those who have it so that should satisfy btrfs and make it not a big deal to check the file_update_time() return code in the generic fault path. * vfs: fix the stupidity with i_dentry in inode destructorsAl Viro2012-01-031-1/+0
| | | | | | | | | | Seeing that just about every destructor got that INIT_LIST_HEAD() copied into it, there is no point whatsoever keeping this INIT_LIST_HEAD in inode_init_once(); the cost of taking it into inode_init_always() will be negligible for pipes and sockets and negative for everything else. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The label 'out_bdi' should be followed by bdi_destroy() instead of fput() which should be after the 'out_fput' label. If bdi_setup_and_register() fails then jump to the 'out_fput' label instead of the 'out_bdi' one. If fget(data.info_fd) fails then jump to the previously fixed 'out_bdi' label to call bdi_destroy() otherwise the bdi object will not be destroyed. Compile tested only. * fs: push i_mutex and filemap_write_and_wait down into ->fsync() handlersJosef Bacik2011-07-201-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Btrfs needs to be able to control how filemap_write_and_wait_range() is called in fsync to make it less of a painful operation, so push down taking i_mutex and the calling of filemap_write_and_wait() down into the ->fsync() handlers. Some file systems can drop taking the i_mutex altogether it seems, like ext3 and ocfs2. For correctness sake I just pushed everything down in all cases to make sure that we keep the current behavior the same for everybody, and then each individual fs maintainer can make up their mind about what to do from there. * memcg: add the pagefault count into memcg statsYing Han2011-05-261-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Two new stats in per-memcg memory.stat which tracks the number of page faults and number of major page faults. "pgfault" "pgmajfault" They are different from "pgpgin"/"pgpgout" stat which count number of pages charged/discharged to the cgroup and have no meaning of reading/ writing page to disk. It is valuable to track the two stats for both measuring application's performance as well as the efficiency of the kernel page reclaim path. Counting pagefaults per process is useful, but we also need the aggregated value since processes are monitored and controlled in cgroup basis in memcg. Functional test: check the total number of pgfault/pgmajfault of all memcgs and compare with global vmstat value: $ cat /proc/vmstat | grep fault pgfault 1070751 pgmajfault 553 $ cat /dev/cgroup/memory.stat | grep fault pgfault 1071138 pgmajfault 553 total_pgfault 1071142 total_pgmajfault 553 $ cat /dev/cgroup/A/memory.stat | grep fault pgfault 199 pgmajfault 0 total_pgfault 199 total_pgmajfault 0 Performance test: run page fault test(pft) wit 16 thread on faulting in 15G anon pages in 16G container. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | flush_scheduled_work() is deprecated and scheduled to be removed. Directly flush the used works on stop instead. Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org> Cc: Petr Vandrovec <petr@vandrovec.name>
* | fs: rcu-walk aware d_revalidate methodNick Piggin2011-01-072-0/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Require filesystems be aware of .d_revalidate being called in rcu-walk mode (nd->flags & LOOKUP_RCU). For now do a simple push down, returning -ECHILD from all implementations. Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>
* | fs: dcache reduce branches in lookup pathNick Piggin2011-01-072-3/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Reduce some branches and memory accesses in dcache lookup by adding dentry flags to indicate common d_ops are set, rather than having to check them. This saves a pointer memory access (dentry->d_op) in common path lookup situations, and saves another pointer load and branch in cases where we have d_op but not the particular operation. Patched with: git grep -E '[.>]([[:space:]])*d_op([[:space:]])*=' | xargs sed -e 's/\([^\t ]*\)->d_op = \(.*\);/d_set_d_op(\1, \2);/' -e 's/\([^\t ]*\)\.d_op = \(.*\);/d_set_d_op(\&\1, \2);/' -i Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>
* | fs: icache RCU free inodesNick Piggin2011-01-071-1/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | RCU free the struct inode. This will allow: - Subsequent store-free path walking patch. The inode must be consulted for permissions when walking, so an RCU inode reference is a must. - sb_inode_list_lock to be moved inside i_lock because sb list walkers who want to take i_lock no longer need to take sb_inode_list_lock to walk the list in the first place. This will simplify and optimize locking. - Could remove some nested trylock loops in dcache code - Could potentially simplify things a bit in VM land. Do not need to take the page lock to follow page->mapping. The downsides of this is the performance cost of using RCU. In a simple creat/unlink microbenchmark, performance drops by about 10% due to inability to reuse cache-hot slab objects. As iterations increase and RCU freeing starts kicking over, this increases to about 20%. In cases where inode lifetimes are longer (ie. many inodes may be allocated during the average life span of a single inode), a lot of this cache reuse is not applicable, so the regression caused by this patch is smaller. The cache-hot regression could largely be avoided by using SLAB_DESTROY_BY_RCU, however this adds some complexity to list walking and store-free path walking, so I prefer to implement this at a later date, if it is shown to be a win in real situations. I haven't found a regression in any non-micro benchmark so I doubt it will be a problem. Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>
* | fs: dcache rationalise dget variantsNick Piggin2011-01-071-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | dget_locked was a shortcut to avoid the lazy lru manipulation when we already held dcache_lock (lru manipulation was relatively cheap at that point). However, how that the lru lock is an innermost one, we never hold it at any caller, so the lock cost can now be avoided. We already have well working lazy dcache LRU, so it should be fine to defer LRU manipulations to scan time. Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>
* | fs: dcache remove dcache_lockNick Piggin2011-01-072-7/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | dcache_lock no longer protects anything. remove it. Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>
* | fs: dcache scale subdirsNick Piggin2011-01-072-0/+7
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Protect d_subdirs and d_child with d_lock, except in filesystems that aren't using dcache_lock for these anyway (eg. using i_mutex). Note: if we change the locking rule in future so that ->d_child protection is provided only with ->d_parent->d_lock, it may allow us to reduce some locking. But it would be an exception to an otherwise regular locking scheme, so we'd have to see some good results. Probably not worthwhile. Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>
* | fs: change d_hash for rcu-walkNick Piggin2011-01-071-4/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Change d_hash so it may be called from lock-free RCU lookups. See similar patch for d_compare for details. For in-tree filesystems, this is just a mechanical change. Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>
* | fs: change d_compare for rcu-walkNick Piggin2011-01-072-14/+19
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Change d_compare so it may be called from lock-free RCU lookups. This does put significant restrictions on what may be done from the callback, however there don't seem to have been any problems with in-tree fses. If some strange use case pops up that _really_ cannot cope with the rcu-walk rules, we can just add new rcu-unaware callbacks, which would cause name lookup to drop out of rcu-walk mode. For in-tree filesystems, this is just a mechanical change. Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>
