* i2c: Remove all i2c_set_clientdata(client, NULL) in driversWolfram Sang2010-06-031-1/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | I2C drivers can use the clientdata-pointer to point to private data. As I2C devices are not really unregistered, but merely detached from their driver, it used to be the drivers obligation to clear this pointer during remove() or a failed probe(). As a couple of drivers forgot to do this, it was agreed that it was cleaner if the i2c-core does this clearance when appropriate, as there is no guarantee for the lifetime of the clientdata-pointer after remove() anyhow. This feature was added to the core with commit e4a7b9b04de15f6b63da5ccdd373ffa3057a3681 to fix the faulty drivers. As there is no need anymore to clear the clientdata-pointer, remove all current occurrences in the drivers to simplify the code and prevent confusion. * lktdm: add support for hardlockup, softlockup and hung task crashesFrederic Weisbecker2010-05-271-0/+20
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This adds three new types of kernel "crashes" in the lkdtm driver to trigger hardlockups, softlockups and task hung states at will. The first two are useful to test the new generic lockup detector and check its further regressions. The latter one is a bonus to check the hung task detector regressions even though it's not currently in rework. | * | | at24: Fall back to byte or word reads if neededJean Delvare2010-05-211-11/+48

All SMBus controllers should support either word reads or byte reads, so read support becomes universal, much like with the legacy "eeprom" driver. Obviously, this only works with EEPROM chips up to AT24C16, that use 8-bit offset addressing. 16-bit offset addressing is almost impossible to support on SMBus controllers. I did not add universal support for writes, as I had no immediate need for this, but it could be added later if needed (with the same performance issue as byte and word reads have, of course.) * | VMware Balloon driverDmitry Torokhov2010-04-243-0/+849
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This is a standalone version of VMware Balloon driver. Ballooning is a technique that allows hypervisor dynamically limit the amount of memory available to the guest (with guest cooperation). In the overcommit scenario, when hypervisor set detects that it needs to shuffle some memory, it instructs the driver to allocate certain number of pages, and the underlying memory gets returned to the hypervisor. Later hypervisor may return memory to the guest by reattaching memory to the pageframes and instructing the driver to "deflate" balloon. We are submitting a standalone driver because KVM maintainer (Avi Kivity) expressed opinion (rightly) that our transport does not fit well into virtqueue paradigm and thus it does not make much sense to integrate with virtio. There were also some concerns whether current ballooning technique is the right thing. If there appears a better framework to achieve this we are prepared to evaluate and switch to using it, but in the meantime we'd like to get this driver upstream. We want to get the driver accepted in distributions so that users do not have to deal with an out-of-tree module and many distributions have "upstream first" requirement. The driver has been shipping for a number of years and users running on VMware platform will have it installed as part of VMware Tools even if it will not come from a distribution, thus there should not be additional risk in pulling the driver into mainline. The driver will only activate if host is VMware so everyone else should not be affected at all. * | include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo2010-03-3029-3/+27
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. * driver core: Convert some drivers to CLASS_ATTR_STRINGAndi Kleen2010-03-071-9/+4
| | | | | | | | | | Convert some drivers who export a single string as class attribute to the new class_attr_string functions. This removes redundant code all over. Signed-off-by: Andi Kleen <ak@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* driver-core: Add attribute argument to class_attribute show/storeAndi Kleen2010-03-071-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Passing the attribute to the low level IO functions allows all kinds of cleanups, by sharing low level IO code without requiring an own function for every piece of data. Also drivers can extend the attributes with own data fields and use that in the low level function. This makes the class attributes the same as sysdev_class attributes and plain attributes. This will allow further cleanups in drivers. Full tree sweep converting all users. Signed-off-by: Andi Kleen <ak@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* lkdtm: add debugfs access and loosen KPROBE tiesSimon Kagstrom2010-03-061-82/+390
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add adds a debugfs interface and additional failure modes to LKDTM to provide similar functionality to the provoke-crash driver submitted here: http://lwn.net/Articles/371208/ Crashes can now be induced either through module parameters (as before) or through the debugfs interface as in provoke-crash. The patch also provides a new "direct" interface, where KPROBES are not used, i.e., the crash is invoked directly upon write to the debugfs file. When built without KPROBES configured, only this mode is available. Signed-off-by: Simon Kagstrom <simon.kagstrom@netinsight.net> Cc: M. * bitops: rename for_each_bit() to for_each_set_bit()Akinobu Mita2010-03-061-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Rename for_each_bit to for_each_set_bit in the kernel source tree. To permit for_each_clear_bit(), should that ever be added. The patch includes a macro to map the old for_each_bit() onto the new for_each_set_bit(). This is a (very) temporary thing to ease the migration. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Based on patch originally by Jeff Mahoney <jeffm@suse.com> enclosure_status is expected to be a NULL terminated array of strings but isn't actually NULL terminated. * | | | gru: send cross partition interrupts using the gruJack Steiner2009-12-162-15/+36
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | GRU Message queue instructions are used to deliver messages to other SSIs within the numalink domain. In most cases, a single GRU mesq instruction will deliver both the message AND an interrupt to notify the other SSI that a messsage is present. In some cases, however, the interrupt must be sent explicitly. To improve resilency, the GRU driver should send these explicit interrupts using the GRU to write the remote chipset register. Current code sends the interrupt using a cpu instruction to write the chipset register.
