* [PATCH] sanitize __user_walk_fd() et.al.Al Viro2008-07-261-5/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | * do not pass nameidata; struct path is all the callers want. * switch to new helpers: user_path_at(dfd, pathname, flags, &path) user_path(pathname, &path) user_lpath(pathname, &path) user_path_dir(pathname, &path) (fail if not a directory) The last 3 are trivial macro wrappers for the first one. * remove nameidata in callers. * flag parameters: pipeUlrich Drepper2008-07-241-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch introduces the new syscall pipe2 which is like pipe but it also takes an additional parameter which takes a flag value. This patch implements the handling of O_CLOEXEC for the flag. I did not add support for the new syscall for the architectures which have a special sys_pipe implementation. I think the maintainers of those archs have the chance to go with the unified implementation but that's up to them. The implementation introduces do_pipe_flags. I did that instead of changing all callers of do_pipe because some of the callers are written in assembler. I would probably screw up changing the assembly code. To avoid breaking code do_pipe is now a small wrapper around do_pipe_flags. Once all callers are changed over to do_pipe_flags the old do_pipe function can be removed. The following test must be adjusted for architectures other than x86 and x86-64 and in case the syscall numbers changed. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ #include <fcntl.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <unistd.h> #include <sys/syscall.h> #ifndef __NR_pipe2 # ifdef __x86_64__ # define __NR_pipe2 293 # elif defined __i386__ # define __NR_pipe2 331 # else # error "need __NR_pipe2" # endif #endif int main (void) { int fd[2]; if (syscall (__NR_pipe2, fd, 0) != 0) { puts ("pipe2(0) failed"); return 1; } for (int i = 0; i < 2; ++i) { int coe = fcntl (fd[i], F_GETFD); if (coe == -1) { puts ("fcntl failed"); return 1; } if (coe & FD_CLOEXEC) { printf ("pipe2(0) set close-on-exit for fd[%d]\n", i); return 1; } } close (fd[0]); close (fd[1]); if (syscall (__NR_pipe2, fd, O_CLOEXEC) != 0) { puts ("pipe2(O_CLOEXEC) failed"); return 1; } for (int i = 0; i < 2; ++i) { int coe = fcntl (fd[i], F_GETFD); if (coe == -1) { puts ("fcntl failed"); return 1; } if ((coe & FD_CLOEXEC) == 0) { printf ("pipe2(O_CLOEXEC) does not set close-on-exit for fd[%d]\n", i); return 1; } } close (fd[0]); close (fd[1]); puts ("OK"); return 0; } ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Signed-off-by: Ulrich Drepper <drepper@redhat.com> Acked-by: Davide Libenzi <davidel@xmailserver.org> Cc: Michael Kerrisk <mtk.manpages@googlemail.com> Cc: <linux-arch@vger.kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
* mm: drop unneeded pgdat argument from free_area_init_node()Johannes Weiner2008-07-241-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | free_area_init_node() gets passed in the node id as well as the node descriptor. This is redundant as the function can trivially get the node descriptor itself by means of NODE_DATA() and the node's id. I checked all the users and NODE_DATA() seems to be usable everywhere from where this function is called. * unified (weak) sys_pipe implementationUlrich Drepper2008-05-031-13/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This replaces the duplicated arch-specific versions of "sys_pipe()" with one unified implementation. This removes almost 250 lines of duplicated code. It's marked __weak, so that *if* an architecture wants to override the default implementation it can do so by simply having its own replacement version, since many architectures use alternate calling conventions for the 'pipe()' system call for legacy reasons (ie traditional UNIX implementations often return the two file descriptors in registers) I still haven't changed the cris version even though Linus says the BKL isn't needed. * iomap: fix 64 bits resources on 32 bitsBenjamin Herrenschmidt2008-04-291-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Almost all implementations of pci_iomap() in the kernel, including the generic lib/iomap.c one, copies the content of a struct resource into unsigned long's which will break on 32 bits platforms with 64 bits resources. This fixes all definitions of pci_iomap() to use resource_size_t. I also "fixed" the 64bits arch for consistency. * mm: have zonelist contains structs with both a zone pointer and zone_idxMel Gorman2008-04-281-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Filtering zonelists requires very frequent use of zone_idx(). This is costly as it involves a lookup of another structure and a substraction operation. As the zone_idx is often required, it should be quickly accessible. The node idx could also be stored here if it was found that accessing zone->node is significant which may be the case on workloads where nodemasks are heavily used. This patch introduces a struct zoneref to store a zone pointer and a zone index. The zonelist then consists of an array of these struct zonerefs which are looked up as necessary. Helpers are given for accessing the zone index as well as the node index. * mm: use two zonelist that are filtered by GFP maskMel Gorman2008-04-281-4/+7
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently a node has two sets of zonelists, one for each zone type in the system and a second set for GFP_THISNODE allocations. Based on the zones allowed by a gfp mask, one of these zonelists is selected. All of these zonelists consume memory and occupy cache lines. This patch replaces the multiple zonelists per-node with two zonelists. The first contains all populated zones in the system, ordered by distance, for fallback allocations when the target/preferred node has no free pages. The second contains all populated zones in the node suitable for GFP_THISNODE allocations. An iterator macro is introduced called for_each_zone_zonelist() that interates through each zone allowed by the GFP flags in the selected zonelist. * [PARISC] dump_stack in show_regsKyle McMartin2008-03-151-0/+2
| | | | | | | | Originally, show_stack was used in BUG() output. However, a recent commit changed it to print register state (no idea what that's supposed to help, really...) and parisc was missing a backtrace because of it. Signed-off-by: Kyle McMartin <kyle@parisc-linux.org>

* Embed a struct path into struct nameidata instead of nd->{dentry,mnt}Jan Blunck2008-02-141-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This is the central patch of a cleanup series. In most cases there is no good reason why someone would want to use a dentry for itself. This series reflects that fact and embeds a struct path into nameidata. Together with the other patches of this series - it enforced the correct order of getting/releasing the reference count on <dentry,vfsmount> pairs - it prepares the VFS for stacking support since it is essential to have a struct path in every place where the stack can be traversed - it reduces the overall code size: without patch series: text data bss dec hex filename 5321639 858418 715768 6895825 6938d1 vmlinux with patch series: text data bss dec hex filename 5320026 858418 715768 6894212 693284 vmlinux This patch: Switch from nd->{dentry,mnt} to nd->path.{dentry,mnt} everywhere.
