* proc 2/2: remove struct proc_dir_entry::ownerAlexey Dobriyan2009-03-311-4/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Setting ->owner as done currently (pde->owner = THIS_MODULE) is racy as correctly noted at bug #12454. Someone can lookup entry with NULL ->owner, thus not pinning enything, and release it later resulting in module refcount underflow. We can keep ->owner and supply it at registration time like ->proc_fops and ->data. But this leaves ->owner as easy-manipulative field (just one C assignment) and somebody will forget to unpin previous/pin current module when switching ->owner. ->proc_fops is declared as "const" which should give some thoughts. ->read_proc/->write_proc were just fixed to not require ->owner for protection. rmmod'ed directories will be empty and return "." and ".." -- no harm. And directories with tricky enough readdir and lookup shouldn't be modular. We definitely don't want such modular code. Removing ->owner will also make PDE smaller. So, let's nuke it. Kudos to Jeff Layton for reminding about this, let's say, oversight. http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12454 Signed-off-by: Alexey Dobriyan <adobriyan@gmail.com>

| | | | | | | | | | | | | Newer server features such as nfsv4 and gss depend on proc to work, so a failure to initialize the proc files they need should be treated as fatal. | * [PATCH] mark struct file_operations const 8Arjan van de Ven2007-02-121-6/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Many struct file_operations in the kernel can be "const". * [PATCH] knfsd: nfsd: don't drop silently on upcall deferralJ.Bruce Fields2006-12-131-4/+7
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | To avoid tying up server threads when nfsd makes an upcall (to mountd, to get export options, to idmapd, for nfsv4 name<->id mapping, etc.), we temporarily "drop" the request and save enough information so that we can revisit it later. Certain failures during the deferral process can cause us to really drop the request and never revisit it. This is often less than ideal, and is unacceptable in the NFSv4 case--rfc 3530 forbids the server from dropping a request without also closing the connection. As a first step, we modify the deferral code to return -ETIMEDOUT (which is translated to nfserr_jukebox in the v3 and v4 cases, and remains a drop in the v2 case). Signed-off-by: J. * WorkStruct: Pass the work_struct pointer instead of context dataDavid Howells2006-11-221-3/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Pass the work_struct pointer to the work function rather than context data. The work function can use container_of() to work out the data. For the cases where the container of the work_struct may go away the moment the pending bit is cleared, it is made possible to defer the release of the structure by deferring the clearing of the pending bit. To make this work, an extra flag is introduced into the management side of the work_struct. This governs auto-release of the structure upon execution. Ordinarily, the work queue executor would release the work_struct for further scheduling or deallocation by clearing the pending bit prior to jumping to the work function. This means that, unless the driver makes some guarantee itself that the work_struct won't go away, the work function may not access anything else in the work_struct or its container lest they be deallocated.. This is a problem if the auxiliary data is taken away (as done by the last patch). However, if the pending bit is *not* cleared before jumping to the work function, then the work function *may* access the work_struct and its container with no problems. But then the work function must itself release the work_struct by calling work_release(). In most cases, automatic release is fine, so this is the default. Special initiators exist for the non-auto-release case (ending in _NAR). Signed-Off-By: David Howells <dhowells@redhat.com>
* WorkStruct: Separate delayable and non-delayable events.David Howells2006-11-221-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | Separate delayable work items from non-delayable work items be splitting them into a separate structure (delayed_work), which incorporates a work_struct and the timer_list removed from work_struct. The work_struct struct is huge, and this limits it's usefulness. On a 64-bit architecture it's nearly 100 bytes in size. This reduces that by half for the non-delayable type of event. * [PATCH] knfsd: fix race related problem when adding items to and svcrpc auth ↵Neil Brown2006-08-061-1/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | cache If we don't find the item we are lookng for, we allocate a new one, and then grab the lock again and search to see if it has been added while we did the alloc. If it had been added we need to 'cache_put' the newly created item that we are never going to use. But as it hasn't been initialised properly, putting it can cause an oops. So move the ->init call earlier to that it will always be fully initilised if we have to put it. Thanks to Philipp Matthias Hahn <pmhahn@svs.Informatik.Uni-Oldenburg.de> for reporting the problem. * [PATCH] knfsd: Fix two problems that can cause rmmod nfsd to dieNeilBrown2006-05-231-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Both cause the 'entries' count in the export cache to be non-zero at module removal time, so unregistering that cache fails and results in an oops. 1/ exp_pseudoroot (used for NFSv4 only) leaks a reference to an export entry. 2/ sunrpc_cache_update doesn't increment the entries count when it adds an entry. | | | | | | | | | | | | Cache_fresh is now only used in cache.c, so unexport it. * [PATCH] knfsd: An assortment of little fixes to the sunrpc cache codeNeilBrown2006-03-271-6/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | - in cache_check, h must be non-NULL as it has been de-referenced, so don't bother checking for NULL. - When a cache-item is updated, we need to call cache_revisit_request to see if there is a pending request waiting for that item. We were using a transition to CACHE_VALID to see if that was needed, however that is wrong as an expired entry will still be marked 'valid' (as the data is valid and will need to be released). So instead use an off transition for CACHE_PENDING which is exactly the right thing to test. - Add a little bit more debugging info. * [PATCH] sunrpc: cache_register can use wrong module referenceBruce Allan2005-09-071-4/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When registering an RPC cache, cache_register() always sets the owner as the sunrpc module. However, there are RPC caches owned by other modules. With the incorrect owner setting, the real owning module can be removed potentially with an open reference to the cache from userspace. For example, if one were to stop the nfs server and unmount the nfsd filesystem, the nfsd module could be removed eventhough rpc.idmapd had references to the idtoname and nametoid caches (i.e. /proc/net/rpc/nfs4.<cachename>/channel is still open). This resulted in a system panic on one of our machines when attempting to restart the nfs services after reloading the nfsd module. The following patch adds a 'struct module *owner' field in struct cache_detail. The owner is further assigned to the struct proc_dir_entry in cache_register() so that the module cannot be unloaded while user-space daemons have an open reference on the associated file under /proc. * Linux-2.6.12-rc2Linus Torvalds2005-04-161-0/+1189
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
